Home cooked cat food

In addition to pellets, I feed my cats the following, and they thrive:
  1. Egg:
    • Hard boiled egg (not too hard, but yolk must not be sticky), pressed fine with a fork.
Half an egg per cat at most once or twice a week.. Excellent source of protein.
    • In nature, cats may eat raw bird eggs. So, once in a while, I treat them with whisked raw egg.

  2. If I cook for them - below is my recipe.
  • MEAT PROTEIEN
    Either a kilogram of:
    • minced meat  (either chicken or red meat)
    • liver  (occasional, not daily)
    • chicken breasts
    • hake fish (without skin, else see method below).

  • BINDER (THICKENER)
This serves also as an energy booster. Use any one of the following::
    • 2 tablespoons of maize porridge flour - this is gluten free. Highly recommended.
    • 2 tablespoons of brown rice
    • 1 slice of brown bread
    • 1/3 cup of cooked starch food like pasta, rice, barley,  "stampkoring", sweet corn or potato.
  • VEGETABLES AND FRUIT
Cats do not have the digestive enzymes to break down raw plant matter, so by eating cat friendly plants, they may vomit afterwards. Broccoli, cantaloupe, carrots, green beans and fresh alfalfa sprouts are not poisonous to cats. They work similar to cat-friendly grasses.
Use approximately  1 cup per kilogram meat of a mixture of any of the following (in season):
    • grated carrots
    • green beans
    • pumpkin or gem squash
    • grated beet root, preferably pre-cooked
    • chopped spinach (only one small leaf)
    • chopped tomato
    • grated apple
    • grated baby marrow
    • garden peas
    • chopped banana
    • grated quince.
         Vegetables that are not suitable:
      - Members of the onion family
      - Brinjal (egg plant): it contains nicotin
      - Members of the cabbage family, excluding broccoli.
  • LIQUID
2-3  cups water - meat must be covered.

  • FLAVOURING (optional)
    • 1 teaspoon Marmite or 1 cube meat extract (chicken/oxtail/beef).
This contains salt - not for older cats or cats with kidney problems.
    • 1/2 teaspoon Turmeric

  • HEALTH ADDITIVES (optional)
Do not use each one every day: rotate!
    • 5ml brewer's yeast powder (Vit B)
    • 3 capsules Moducare (boost immune system)
    • half a tablet (50g) Vitamin C
    • 15ml Mirra-Coat oil (helps with coat)
    • 5 ml Lysine powder (good to fight Herpes virus)
    • One tablet of Green lipped mussle extract for cats SF4

Method for liver or mince

  1. Put everything except health additives in a 1-liter pot and bring to boil.
  2. If you are using a solid plate stove, switch off and leave pot on plate to cool (30 - 40 minutes).
  3. If you are using a spiral plate or gas stove, cook on low heat for another 5 minutes.
  4. Leave on plate to cool (20 - 30 minutes).
  5. Mash the mixture to desired coarseness.
  6. Add additives when cool

Method for chicken

  • Like above, but when cooked, remove chicken, remove bones and chop meat.
  • Mash the rest like above, and add the chicken.

Method if fish has skin

  • Like above, but when cooking, place fish on top of the rest with skins up.
  • When cooked, remove skin from fish, chop or flake fish and add back to the mixture.
  • Do not give the skin to cats.
